During the Alaska Voyage, Pev was the ship's clerk. He kept a fascinating journal which should be published. The original journal sold at auction on 5/29/2008 for $15,600. http://www.pbagalleries.com/search/item....
The Captain of the steamer (USS Saginaw) during this journey was Richard Worsam Meade III, Peveril's cousin. Meade later became a US Navy Admiral. Meade's uncle was General George Meade of Gettysburgh fame.
Peveril was a direct descendant of William Bradford of Mayflower fame. Also of Captain John Underhill, a soldier hired by the Massachusetts colony to handle the Indian problem. Poet Laureate John Greenleaf Whittier wrote a poem about and named after Underhill.
Peveril married Rosamond Weston, who came from a long line of wealthy NY and Boston merchants (at one time, the largest ship owners in the US). Her grandfather, Moses Grant, was one of the leaders of the Boston Tea Party. Her Uncle, Joshua Bates, was the founder of the Boston Public Library. Her 3 aunts, the Weston sisters (see Maria Chapman Weston), were important Boston abolitionist figures who worked closely with William Lloyd Garrison.
