Diana Ross' s "I Will Survive"??? Come on girl, you know that's Gloria Gaynor's!

You're a little young to remember disco, I'm guessing.

Honey, the album is "That Lucky Old Sun." Great concert, though. Old folks still rocking out!

Oh, come on now. That piece is NOT an op-ed submitted by a journalist with professional credentials. It's just one uninformed resident's submission to the News-Press and no more interesting than other residents' frequent submissions of recipes and book reviews which fill the paper these days in lieu of actual reports filed by actual reporters.

I am "personally and deeply affected" by Norman Jaffe's reference to a boycott: "I could not believe that such an occurrence could take place in our country and especially in our town."

Here's a little American history review. The first recorded boycott on American soil occurred in 1767 after the British Parliament passed the Townshend Acts taxing the American colonists on imports of paper, glass and tea. The American patriots responded by boycotting the purchase of those items and learning to produce them independently. The first boycott was an instrument of public protest and a way of seeking social justice. It's as true and necessary today as it was in 1767.

So if he wants to imply that the Teamsters are acting like the Nazis, I'll go on record to point out that they have more in common with the brave patriots who founded the United States of America.

The right to spout irrelevant nonsense in a public forum is protected by the 1st Amendment to the US Constitution and practiced by the SB News-Press on a daily basis.

Note to any billionaire boneheads who might be reading: You will run out of money before you will be able to buy goodwill in this town.

What's so hilarious about the reverse 911 calls? I look forward to my daily call from the city. They've been very helpful and an excellent source of accurate information. I find it comforting that the city is looking out for us so well.

On Favorable Friday Winds Aided Firefighting Efforts

Posted on July 5 at 12:07 p.m.

Beautiful day out here at Winchester & Cathedral Oaks. Not like the night of July 3rd which was just terrifying seeing the thick black clouds of smoke racing along the ridge behind our homes. The skies are much clearer and less ash is falling, although when the winds pick up at night, we do have to shut up all the doors and windows because of the heavy smoky smell and more ash falling. I still hear all the helicopters, but I don't see them in this area. Power still goes out - sometimes a couple of times a day, briefly - but I'm all prepared for that, so it's pretty easy-breezy in this area. The reverse 911 calls regularly provide info and the Indy is great. This end of Goleta seems to have lucked out so far. Thanks to all.

On Firefighters Cope With Changing Winds

We got a "reverse 911" call at about 9:30 this morning from the city. It just said that we should stay off Cathedral Oaks from Fairview to Winchester Canyon, because the firefighters want to keep traffic down. Their headquarters is Dos Pueblos HS, but we can use the surrounding streets to get around. Also, be sure to stock up on whatever you need in the event of other power outages - flashlights, batteries, etc. And if we do need to evacuate, they will phone us with that info. Also they mentioned fire info kiosks at at the Community Center, Camino Real, etc.
If was just a helpful information call. I'm glad to know the system works.

On Early Morning Gap Fire Update

Hey, GoletaResident, another good link! Isn't it a shame we can't easily get information on the fire. The Independent is the best, but when we lost power for a few hours last night, there went all the news. I had a battery powered radio, but all the stations were just playing music - no news. It stinks that we don't have a local news radio station.

I appreciated the "reverse 911" call this morning that gave me the news on the Cathedral Oaks road closure and the possibility of other power outages. I heard helicopters at 10 last night, so I figured the fire was spreading fast. The firefighters are doing a GREAT job. Things could be worse - FEMA could be managing this emergency and then we'd really be in trouble!!!

Air quality is pretty good now in Winchester Canyon. There's a light breeze but the smoke's not coming toward us. The cars and plants have a covering of ash on them though. The heavy smoke is covering the view of the flames, but when the wind shifts you can see several areas burning pretty brightly. Constant sound of helicopters coming and going. And that's a good thing!!

Thanks for the firefighters link. It's interesting and very helpful. The fire's still lighting up the sky out here in Winchester Canyon.

Yes, that whatz called efficiency. Tonight, while attending the CAMA event I will also come out of the Arlington and find the marquee changed to show the next event. The marquee is always changed while the theatre-goers are inside instead of when they are exiting, or having the staff wait after everyone has left the building. You don't get out much, do you?
