I keep finding debates about the achievment gap between children from different social backgrounds.Everyone talks about changes inside of the schooling structure. How about considering a different schooling system instead of doing multiple changes inside of it? Everyone praises democracy but we teach in hierarchical structures.Additionally we have an evaluation system which supports just one way of thinking, one way of expressing and developing and the norms and values of one culture. How is it possible so achieve that way more equality of opportunity? No wonder, a certain group of students achieve more as the academic way works in favour of their background, leaving behind the others,in this case Hispanic students. It is worth to have a look at the structure of democratic schools such as Sudbury, Summerhill etc. Especially in a diverse, poor environment where it is time to give them more responsibility. I have worked with difficult students and I have experienced that it is possible. The idea of smaller sizes in groups is already a start at least though!
