When 4 of us hiked that trail in '74 we had a hand drawn map and we never saw another soul until we hit Macchu Picchu itself. Hail to Hiram Bingham!

The problem is not the gardeners but the home owners that fail to tell them NO BLOWERS! I would never let my gardener use one. Granted I only hire him on rare occasions when I really need help but I do just fine without one. They are evil air polluters that just move the leaves and dust to your neighbors house and yard. Ban them entirely I say.

Wow! Great inteview Cathy and congratulations to Margaret Connell. There is now hope that Goleta and Noleta will be preserved as the paradise it is for future generations. Take that Bacara!

Also great move on the part of the Indie to have video clips inserted. Now that I've cancelled my subscription to the News-Suppress I am looking forward to more and better reporting from the Independent.

The first thing this new board should do is review the reasoning behind annexing any new areas, especially ag lands on the Gaviota coast that are proposed to be turned into mansions for wealthy out of towners. How does that serve the interests of GWD current ratepayers and individual users?

Starshine,
I really am a big fan of your column and I think the plight of women worldwide, especially Afghanistan and other extremist Muslim countries is quite terrible and worries me and it is a serious issue. However, I think this week's column is a sign you are running out of things to write about. Time to take a vacation from the kids and the hubby. Don't get me wrong, I love the moon, I love hiking by moonlight but its really just a big beautiful rock with reflected light from the sun.

Not so fast. That poor Matt Osgood has no idea what he is up against. This community is not going to roll over that easily. The approval process by the county has violated so many state and local regulations bending over backwards to help him get rich at the community's expense that it is going to take years of legal challenges and appeals before he can legally start building. I hope his financial backers have a lot patience and spare cash because it will be a long time before they start to see any return. I almost feel sorry for the guy .................................but not quite.

My first board ever was a custom made 8 ft. fun shaped Randy Cone. Hanging on the wall of his shop out in Goleta was a huge skinny red pointy thing and I asked what the hell that was. Him and his friend said that's a Maverick's board which meant nothing to me. I am a lousy surfer but the stoke is strong. Randy is definitely one of the great ones and his comments in this article are right on! Man do I wish I had that board back now.

Barney,
Generally I really really love your coulumn, but your taste in food is, how can I say this tactfully......plebiean. Some of the worst pancakes I ever ate were at Esaus. It may have ambience with surfboards overhead but if you want the best pancakes in SB County East Beach Grill is the hands down winner, and how can you beat that view! Based on my respect for you, Barney, I will give the new Esau's place one more try but they will have to be pretty amazing. Now El Encanto is a whole other thing and I cannot wait for them to reopen.

Tom,
All those facts are just proving you are a liberal pinko. Real Republicans don't need no stinkin' facts, hell they don't actually even believe in science.

Excellent article. Points out that folks can pray when and where they want. I'd hope that the advocates of school prayer keep this in mind. Organized prayer by school officials during school hours is inapproriate and unconstitutional. However, any student can pray silently anytime they want( ususally before a big test I suspect) in school and I'm quite certain that if there are any gods that prayer will be heard. The idea that you have to make a big fuss about prayer, say it out loud with everybody joining in is pretty darn silly. Even the idea that it needs to be done in a church is pretty silly.
