Our police chief was recently asked what he planned to do about illegal immigrants in our city. He said that if the feds were to demand that he enforce the law, he would quit his job. Unbelievable. — Dennis McNabol

Isn't' it his job to enforce the law? If he has to be forced to do his job, we need a new police chief. Unbelievable is absolutely right. Lets just give his job to Vincente Fox.

What people such as Sanchez fail to do is to think this thing through.

What illegal immigration is ultimately about is cheap labor/exploitation. These supporters of open borders are so wrapped up in their idealism that they fail to realize that their philosophy undermines the progress made over the last century in the improvment of labor standards. They also fail to see that our open border enables Mexico's (and to a lesser degree, other countries') inept governing.

To respond to the weak argument that our economy would collapse without endless numbers of people coming into the U.S., I say that the same argument was used to justify the continuation of slavery. Furthermore, were things in this country so bad BEFORE this mass migration happened? And once again: How about Mexico fixing its problems? (And perhaps U.S. policy might be hindering such a fix?...I don't know, I'm just saying...)

On the other hand, let me be the "Devil's Advocate": Can it be that he feels the laws as they are currently written are impractical?...or is he just simply wrapped up in the zeitgeist of typical Santa Barbara psuedo-Progressive politics?

Judge Mr Sanchez' record during his tenure as top cop. Has his policies of lax enforcement of immigration laws worked? Has gang violence been reduced. If so then he deserves praise. If not then it's time to get rid of him and the politicians that keep him in office.

On the other hand, perhaps his opposition to enforcing immigration laws is based on the fact that such enforcement would mean less increase in crime thus it would be bad for business.

Would Chief Sanchez be as tolerant of gangs, or illegal immigrants, if they were largely white and from Europe? How would he react to Swedish skinhead gangs roaming the streets and intimidating Latinos? What if the children of Swedish illegal immigrants formed a student oranization whose motto was "For the Nordic Race Everything, outside the Nordic Race Nothing"? I guee these questions could be asked of progressives in general.

It's not up to the local authorities to "enforce" immigration law.

The feds need to do their job by picking up illegals who have been identified in the jail and take them away.

How about the illegal immigrant parents of gang bangers that are or will be in jail?

Why don't we hear about the parents of the gangbangers on trail? Even the Indy is covering that up.

If as he says he will leave if told to do his job by enforcing the law, he should go and make room for a grownup.

Revisionist asks: "Would Chief Sanchez be as tolerant of gangs, or illegal immigrants, if they were largely white and from Europe?"

It's impossible to answer that question as long as we don't know his motive for not enforcing the law.

What we need is to hear him explain why he won't enforce the law.

Revisionist is right to point out the hypocrisy of organized progressive thinking. (As opposed to sincere true progressives) These groups are very quick to point out any injustice committed by White folks, or as they sometimes inaccuratly describe them as "Anglos", but if the situation is reversed, they become as silent as monks.

Back about four or five years ago there was a News-Press story about how the last White student in Harding school (Maybe there are White students now) was being pulled out because his mother--who happens to be the stepdaughter of Hannah-Beth Jackson and the daughter of Judge George Eskin--pointed out that among the reasons for pulling him out was because only one of his classmates came to his birthday party and he was never invited to any of their birthday parties.

Yes, we have a definite double standard when it comes to the application of defining racism.
