Candidate for 3rd District supervisor Steve Pappas announced on 5/13 he had brought in more than $165,000 since the last statement, a dramatic increase from the amount he had raised previously and, if accurate, an impressive number for one filing period. The next round of campaign statements are due to the county elections office on 5/22.

Santa Barbara’s Wheel Fun Rentals is following in the footsteps of its fellow franchises up and down the coast and giving free rentals to Big and Little Brothers and Sisters, which operates in Santa Barbara under the auspices of Family Services Agency. All three Wheel Fun locations will rent bicycles, skates, and – for those with drivers’ licenses – electric vehicles for free to mentors and protégées for the duration of their participation in the program.

Law and Disorder

Transportation Security Administration employees found a 10-inch knife in a man’s carry-on luggage at Santa Barbara Airport on 5/2 and arrested the 19-year-old man for possession of an illegal weapon. As the bag made its way through the x-ray machine, authorities noticed the weapon, which had two sharpened edges, in the man’s backpack. The man was attempting to board a flight to Los Angeles.

Santa Barbara-based Direct Relief International (DRI) is in touch with its partners in Myanmar as well as groups in neighboring countries to offer help to people affected by the Asian cyclone that is estimated to have killed more than 22,000. DRI is hoping to assist in Myanmar – which historically rarely invites outside assistance in emergencies – and offer medical attention to injured people.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department announced on 5/1 a new online program that allows citizens to check a database of registered sex offenders living within one mile of their home or work. Called Offender Watch, the program also offers free email updates notifying users of any sex offenders moving within one mile of their homes. The program can be found at sbsheriff.org.

Ben Werner and Eric Sandoz – who helm Goleta’s Multimode Technologies, are seeking local investors for the Dagne, a low-cost, ultra-efficient commuter vehicle designed run on six kilowatts of energy per day. The three-wheeled two-seater is designed to be not just street-legal but freeway-worthy, with “brisk pickup” and substantial cornering performance, said Werner, who intends to retail it for about $18,000.

A Santa Barbara patrons group for the Haitian microloan program Fonkoze raised enough in contributions – $35,000, combined with $30,000 from the Haitian administration – to open a branch this winter in the northern Haitian town of Jean Rabel, population 3,300. The start-up funds can operate the branch for a year. Fonkoze Santa Barbara is now focused on raising $50,000 to fund the branch’s literacy training program.
