Mojave

Vancouver, BC acoustic rock band Mojave is kicking off their 2008 US Fall Tour! Music is first and foremost for the band, but they believe in giving back and leaving the planet better than they found it. The band has released a limited edition of their debut album, Stories, in an environmentally friendly package before they head into the studio to record their sophomore album early next year. A charity close to their heart is the Stillpointe Llama Santuary in Washington State, where they have adopted a rescued llama named Starman. A dollar from every CD sold goes directly to the sanctuary, where there are almost 30 llamas that have all been rescued from abusive situations. October 17, 8 p.m., Muddy Waters Cafe ($5)

Hot Buttered Rum

Often described as a rock band playing bluegrass instruments, no prior Butter recording has so perfectly displayed the band’s bolder and heavier side than their new album. Hailing from the San Francisco Bay area, the guys of Hot Buttered Rum grew up on the trails, in the mountains, and on the slopes. Their ties with nature have only grown and as a group, the band has dedicated much time and energy to reducing their carbon footprint and promoting alternative fuel sources. As a heavily touring band, Hot Buttered Rum had to face the tough reality of how a national tour can affect the environment and counter it with a positive change. In response, the band helped to promote the biofuel renaissance, touring the country on recycled vegetable oil and biodiesel as early as 2003. Band members have participated in numerous Renewable Energy and Biofuel conferences, as well as sitting on discussion panels at such renowned music festivals as Bonnaroo and High Sierra. October 24, 9 p.m., SOhO ($12 - $15)

The Devil Makes Three, The Mutineers

Santa Cruz trio The Devil Makes Three returns to S.B. for an encore performance, bringing back their swingin' punk-infused, country-bluegrass sound after a nearly sold-out appearance at Stateside earlier this year. Locals The Mutineers fit nicely on the bill, opening up with a rebellious, foot-stomping set of tunes for what promises to be one fiery night! October 18, 9 p.m., SOhO ($15)

Tequila Mockingbird

Jared Mees and the Grown Children

The first incarnation of the Grown Children was borne of a Panamanian Island, where Mees, his wife (and Tender Loving Empire co-founder) Brianne and two friends wrote the bulk of the songs that would eventually become Sharks.... After recording Sharks in L.A. and moving to Portland Mees embarked upon 2007’s ill fated and aptly named No A/C tour, with the members of Finn Riggins playing many of Mees’ songs. Since then many friends have joined the Grown Children Family, and while the constant lineup changes and improvised, infrequent rehearsals would cause many bands to suffer, they have become the vitality of the Grown Children, giving live shows a devil-may-care energy and keeping the recordings on the new album Caffeine, Alcohol, Sunshine, Money dynamic, vibrant and honest. November 5, 8 p.m., Muddy Waters Cafe
