March 6 marks the date for the casting call of The Bar Life, a proposed new reality series — primed for MTV next fall — that will feature State Street nightlife workers. Essentially, the production calls for six young and charismatic bartenders, bouncers, promoters, deejays, party photographers, and anyone else who works in downtown S.B. and is willing to showcase their lives with special attention paid to the college-town culture of Santa Barbara. The producer of the show is primarily looking for recent college graduates who have forgone the career paths of their majors in order to pursue exciting lives of working in downtown Santa Barbara.

Mike Winner, the producer of The Bar Life, is a UCSB grad who wants to show the lives of people who refuse to leave the town in which they attended college. Anyone interested in this unique opportunity to showcase their talents and promote Santa Barbara culture should report to Tonic Nightclub on March 6 and, in Winner’s words, “have their exciting working lives documented into stardom.”

[Editor’s Note: The production company’s contact information has been removed from this story, as the show’s creators are no longer working with them in the development of The Bar Life.]

I prefer the Santa Barbara that rolled up it's sidewalks at night. This horrible bar and club scene that the Chamber enjoys says nothing about the type of community I want to live in. Importing the I.V. party scene is horrible! We make choices and we are marketing this town for bars over education. This casting call is timely and is there any wonder why we are now spending more on prisons rather than education. Sympathies to the marches though. And how original this "reality" show craze where no one learns from. ' We are entertained to death.'

Dito Don. This is a crap idea. I write the Sober Spitbath and walk the streets of downtown often at night (I live downtown) it is pathetic.
    Rude pathetic wasters-on-a-mission
The path of "less than zero."
These "producers" should add some irony...ask we who live in the downtown neighborhoods what we think?
Our lawn turns into a vomitorium every August...hell every weekend these days!

Can I just point out how old both of you sound? (Old Spanish Days has been in August for 80 years, for God's sake) Next you're going to tell me how much better Santa Barbara was when there were signals on the 101. It's your choice not to show up to the casting call, or patronize businesses on State Street that you no longer believe fit your narrow view of Santa Barbara. But times have the changed and the Santa Barbara you once knew and are still trying to hold on to have long since past.

The downtown scene as it is now (and everyone that is down there every weekend) is pathetic. Why in the world would anybody glamorize a dead-end career path? Santa Barbara will be a laughing stock just like Jersey Shore.

As a native Goletan living elsewhere I fear that what i will be watching will be more stupid stereotyping of SB by people who are really not from SB.

i think you're all a little uptight. this show would just be about college and post-college nightlife in sb. as someone who went to college in sb and loves to visit, no one can deny the great bar and lounge nightlife that state street has to offer - it's pure entertainment. my only criticism is the proposed name of the show. it should be something more like "Blackout Beach"

The show sounds stupid as it is, so probably won't really get aired, but I do have a big problem with this statement: "The producer of the show is primarily looking for recent college graduates who have forgone the career paths of their majors in order to pursue exciting lives of working in downtown Santa Barbara". MTV and this phallic cranium from UCSB are perpetuating the apathy of college graduates who are finding it hard to find meaningful job. It's not surprising, just disgusting.

State St is lame now, so it is ready for MTV. Anybody remember the good old days on State St.? Remember being able to park on State St. and just kick it watching people cruise by? How about when Michael Jordan would guest bartend at O'Malley's?

now this is funny, art imitating life and life imitating art.
i wish the producer much success and think there's plenty of folks that fit the bill for what they're looking for - adults that are STILL living the college life way past college. those people generally do not contribute to the community or others - they live self-centered life focused on drama, hooking up, self-victimization, insecurity, drugs and alcohol... oh wait, i just described the typical college student. ha. actually there are also many self-less college students and folks that can balance a party life with a life of giving. but by in large, this is another excuse to not take responsibility and to avoid actual hard work and community relations. this has nothing to do with age, it has to do with what you're doing (or not) for others.

what about a show showcasing non-profits making a difference... i'd watch that.

Jhabra-Maybe if they wore skimpy swimsuits and there was a generous portion of degenerates your show idea would have a chance. MTV has high standards, you know.

I checked out the production website and found some contact info. I sent an email asking them not to film MTV trash television here. You can tell them how you feel about it, good or bad.

    Very good harborat!
And for the books....I am no THAT old...I think "partying" is really just not that interesting...and when it ends up in my front yard...I take it personally...
Not a "known" career path...yeah know?
I think getting drunk...then getting in car...and killing people is really not something we need to promote or glamorize.

I think this is a REALLY BAD idea for our town. Maybe our local colleges should offer a new major: How to get on a reality telivision series. Do you all remember what a mess IV turned into after the Playboy publication of the coolest places to go on Halloween?

Just think if ON PATROL is filiming at the same time as THE BAR LIFE, the camera people may even get to be stars filming one another!! The two shows filming together at the same time, it will be like the little birdie eating off the Rhino's back. What a circus.

It will make for great t.v. if it aproaches the same kind of disgusting behavior we are shown by other shows like the housewives. Ultimately it is sad, but we cannot tell others how to ruin their lives. So they lead empty lives around alcohol and coke, jonesing to have sex with cokeheads who will only give it up for coke, teasing and acting slutty all the time (and these people are college grads?) Notice that they are looking for deejays, which have replaced musicians as workers in this city. It makes business sense to hire 1 person instead of several. I guess that's why the musicians are homeless, playing for change on the sidewalks downtown. SB nightlife, so enticing....

To DonMcDermott and emenzies I agree with you both 100%.

To sbdude: The problem some of us "old" people have is the way the booze culture inflicts itself on others. If you wish to kill brain cells and fry your liver, that is your choice: it's your body and soul. What many of us resent is how the local politicians sold us out over the last few decades and turned downtown into a drunkfest where residents there have to put up with people vomiting and urinating on their lawns and of course have to deal with the noise these bars generate. Then of course there is the drunk driving problem. Additionally, if you need a cop during the night good luck: you may have to wait a long time before one gets free while they babysit the spoiled brats who have no vested interest in the well being of Santa Barbara.

There IS another side to this story, but let's face it: stupidity not only is becoming the norm, it's celebrated in our culture. Any wonder we're in this economic mess?

I think a much more fascinating show idea would be about the numerous 40 year old burnouts with peter-pan syndrome that made the unconscious decision to never do anything with their lives. That would be worth watching.

I grew up in Laguna Beach, and it was a pretty cool chill town until MTV arrived. I was traveling deep Asia, came back a year later and it was as if the town had been invaded by annoyed women in Range Rovers wearing big dumb sunglasses and botoxed men with the same attitude. I moved away. Hope this doesn't happen here. I really dig Santa Barbara and MTV is a reallllly bad reality tv cancer on the towns it leeches. -AB in SB

I agree that this is a bad idea - both as a series and for the town. SB is not a "college town". It is also not known for it's bar life.

To the people behind this idea - you are going to find it very difficult selling the idea that SB is a party town to executives who know more about SB than you seem to. Jersey Shore is a hit because the general public already sees Jersey people as the typecasts that are portrayed in the series. Rehab is a hit because people see Vegas as a party town. What would make a great show filmed in SB? Figure it out.

At 2am this morning...a drunk fell ONTO my porch and into a lavender bush...6'1" 21 years old....drunk...passed out...his phone went off several times and it sounded like he was coming through the door ...the phone was that loud...I called the SBPD ...they arrived in 5 minutes...it took them a few minutes to wake him up...to which he responded with a bellowing F*** Off...the cop said "are you sure you want to say that?" and the dumb kid said, " YES..F*** OFF" and he tried to take a swing...but he a limp noodle...they scooped him out of my lavender...I hope he spends a good long time in jail...the dumb ass tried to say the cop had hit him...but I was standing on my porch and NO one got hit...except my heather and lavender bushes....
SOOO TO THE REALITY TV FOLKS....come interview me and I will tell you what I think of you glamourizing "the drunk like"..."drink til you drop" "pub crawl til ya puke"......PaLEAZE!
