Police are investigating the 9/27 shooting at the intersection of De la Vina and West Gutierrez streets. An 18-year-old who was shot through the nose has been released from Cottage Hospital, while a 28-year-old shot in the abdomen remains there in stable condition. The investigation has so far resulted in the arrest of 22-year-old Sebastian Covarrubias, a search of whose home resulted in the discovery of a Molotov cocktail. Covarrubias, however, has not been charged with the shooting, and police have not said whether he or the two victims are gang members. (/shooting1002)

Zaren, who died from her injuries on 9/24, ran the Family Homeopathic Clinic at 28 E. Canon Perdido St. Authorities have not determined whether her death was by suicide or accident. (/zaren1002)

A 9/23 confrontation at Alice Keck Park Memorial Gardens resulted in a 20-year-old being stabbed in the abdomen. While he was taken to the hospital, his friends said the victim had challenged a stranger to a fight. The latter produced a knife and stabbed the challenger. Officers later investigated a report of the incident from a second group of people and ended up arresting 25-year-old Fernando Aldapa on charges of being the stabber. (/alicekeck1002)

Actress Heather Locklear was arrested by CHP officers on 9/27 on charges of driving under the influence of a controlled substance. According to CHP reports, a concerned citizen reported Locklear after allegedly seeing her repeatedly run over a pair of sunglasses in a Montecito parking lot and then stumble about her car, which she had stopped on East Valley Road. A CHP spokesman said alcohol has been ruled out as the alleged intoxicated agent. (/locklear1002)

Gregory Ward, 45, was arrested on 9/23 for assaulting a man with a hammer in an effort to collect a debt, among other alleged crimes. According to police, Ward forced his way into a home on the 1100 block of Garden Street and repeatedly hit a resident with a hammer before fleeing. Officers later spotted Ward on the 200 block of North Quarantina Street, whereupon he allegedly gave a false name before being identified and arrested. (/hammer1002)

Brian Briley, 31, was on 9/30 released from jail, where he was being held on charges related to his third DUI arrest. A week ago, Briley had been beaten by inmates at Santa Barbara County Jail. Judge Bruce Dodds’s decision to let Briley go came despite protestations from Joyce Dudley, who said that the man’s history with alcohol made him a threat to society. (/briley1002)
