This letter is to support Measure V, the Santa Barbara City College District bond on the ballot on June 3. Measure V has broader community support that almost any local measure on record.

Endorsements include: the Santa Barbara Chamber of Commerce, the Goleta Chamber of Commerce, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the Santa Barbara County Taxpayers Association, the League of Women Voters, the Santa Barbara County Democratic Party, the Santa Barbara County Republican Party, SB CAN, Partners in Education, and Pueblo. When has anyone seen all of these groups line up for a local proposal before?

Measure V would be for cost-effective public infrastructure. The bond is for $77 million, and the amount of matching funds from the state and private donors would be $92 million. 11 specific projects are targeted for funding, in particular a new School of Media Arts. The additional annual estimated assessment per $100,000 is projected not to exceed $8.50, and the final amount would be less than this as the value of assessed property in the college district increased.

About half of local high school students participate in SBCC, either through co-enrollment while they are in high school or enrollment in the college after they graduate. This is one of the highest rates of local participation in a community college in the state.

Measure V will enable SBCC to meet its basic infrastructure and maintenance needs for the next 10 to 15 years. Vote yes.
