Critic’s Pick :Control

The much talked about directorial debut of Anton Corbijn tells the story of the late Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis and his tragic suicide in 1980. The biopic (based on Curtis’s wife’s book Touching from a Distance) will be shown only once in Santa Barbara. The film, which stars Sam Riley, Samantha Morton, and Alexandra Maria Lara, created quite the critical stir at 2007’s Cannes Film Festival, making it the ideal choice for a very special, two-night-only S.B. debut. Fri., Apr. 18, 7 and 10pm; Mon., Apr. 21, 10pm. I.V. Theater, 960 Embarcadero Del Norte, Isla Vista. Visit myspace.com/magiclantern.

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

UCSB’s Arts & Lectures and Magic Lantern team up to bring a free screening of Julian Schnabel’s schnabelicious film. Fri., Apr. 25, 7 and 10pm. I.V. Theater, 960 Embarcadero Del Norte, Isla Vista. Visit myspace.com/magiclantern. Mon., Apr. 28, 7:30pm. Campbell Hall, UCSB. Visit www.artsandlectures.ucsb.edu.

Exiled

Johnny To’s critically acclaimed Hong Kong action film comes to S.B. for the first time. Fri., May 2, 7 and 10pm; Mon., May 5, 10pm. I.V. Theater, 960 Embarcadero Del Norte, Isla Vista. Visit myspace.com/magiclantern.

Iron Man

John Favreau directs the fanboy-anticipated superhero epic. Fri., May 2, general release.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Sooner or later you’ll see it. Fri., May 2, general release.

Critic’s Pick : An Evening with John Cleese

UCSB’s Arts & Lectures presents John Cleese, live and onstage, in this very special night of film and live entertainment. The S.B. inhabitant and well-known member of Monty Python will be on hand to introduce the Python’s 1975 breakout hit (and legendary cult classic), Monty Python and the Holy Grail, as well as answer questions following the screening. Thu., May 15, 7:30pm. Campbell Hall, UCSB. Call 893-3535 or visit www.artsandlectures.ucsb.edu.

4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days
