Search efforts resumed today at dawn for a Santa Barbara man who had been swimming in the Detroit River and is now missing, according to authorities in Gross Ile, a suburb of Detroit.
Police and fire responded to a call of an accidental drowning around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to a news release, and search efforts were initiated by the police and fire departments, along with a dive team and the U.S. Coast Guard. The brother and friends of 37-year-old Matthew Wilkinson lost sight of him as he tried clinging to a buoy in the middle of a channel.
According to a report in The Detroit News, Wilkinson was trying to swim across the Trenton Channel. Authorities suspended search efforts at 2 a.m. without success.
