When: Friday, April 11, 2008, noon-1:30 p.m.

Where: Tannahill Auditorium, Schott Center, 310 W. Padre St., Santa Barbara

The Lowdown: Every quarter, Adult Ed and the Santa Barbara Council for Self Esteem host a series of lectures by area celebrities on the topic of self-esteem. Past speakers have included Independent columnist Starshine Roshell and Santa Barbara International Film Festival Executive Director Roger Durling among others.

The kick-off lecture for the spring term features Mollie Ahlstrand, owner of Trattoria Mollie in Montecito. So how exactly did a woman born in Ethiopia and trained in Italy become an internationally recognized and award-winning chef running her own restaurant in Montecito? Certainly an exquisite and creative gastronomical flair was a key ingredient, which she has in large portion, as anyone who has been to Trattoria Mollie can attest. But it takes something more than that to become a success in the competitive world of culinary arts; it takes hard work, self reliance, and a firm belief in oneself. In other words, it takes a large measure of self esteem.

The format of the “Self-Esteem: How to Seek It and Keep It” series includes Ahlstrand’s lecture and a question/answer session at the end. Come and meet a local favorite and hear her remarkable story. Chances are you’ll come away from the event inspired and motivated to create positive changes in your own life.

Visit the program’s website to see what else is being offered this session.

“Refuse to let anyone limit your life. Be who and what you want to be. You decide the future, not others.” —Mollie Ahlstrand, owner of Trattoria Mollie in Montecito
